Mom's birthday was December 31
Folks -
New Years Eve had long been spent with my Mom celebrating her birthday. I haven't had that joy for a while now.
Here in Mom's memory are the lyrics of a new song.
- Uke Man
.............Remembering Mom................
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
I’m sittin’ in the cart as we roll along
I create the chatter
Momma hums a song
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
She puts Bisquick & Ovaltine sauerkraut and navy beans
Wonder bread and butter in the cart
Maxwell House and coffee cake,
Crisco and Frosted Flakes
And the little boy she loves with all her heart.
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
Sittin’ in the cart we roll along
I provide the chatter
Momma hums a song
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
But the road leads on
And the sea rolls in
And things do change
Once they begin
And the road leads on –
That’s life’s plan
And a little boy
Grows up to be a man –
Goin’ to the grocery with his Mom
Interlude
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
She leans on the cart - I tag along.
We get liverwurst and rye bread,
Sweet-dills from way up high
And a can of pumpkin for a pie.
We put crackers and pimento cheese
Tuna fish and mayonnaise
Hershey bars and grapefruit in the cart
We’re stocking up her larder,
But why I’m really there
Is to hold my mother in my heart.
I remember goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
I was sittin’ in the cart - we rolled along
I produced some chatter
Momma hummed a song
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
But the road leads on –
That’s life’s plan
And a little boy
Becomes an old man –
Goin’ to the grocery without Mom.
Yes, the road leads on
And so do we
And what once was
Is used to be
But although she’s gone
I will always be
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
Goin’ to the grocery with my Mom
