Uke Man as Movie "Star"

Hey Folks -

The Uke Man is off today to Athens, Ohio to meet up with Brian Zahm (A.K.A. Alien Stevens), cinematographer extraordinaire; to do a two minute, black-and-white extravaganza: "Sittin' & Spittin.' "

The script is just as zany as was Auraprint, the first Alien Stevens production in which I played a part (along with my 1984 Eldorado).

I'm sure that "Sittin' & Spittin' " will end up here eventually, but in the meantime check out Auraprint. An earlier posting explains, below.

Uke Man as Movie "Star"

Hey Folks,

It may have escaped your attention, but the Uke Man is a Movie "Star" !!Yessireebob!!!! Thanks to my good friend Alien Stevens ( www.alienstevens.com ).

Yep! In my first major roll I appeared in Auraprint, the saga of a lonely night-shift crew at the Sunnyside Suites Motel.

Mr Steven's script, echoing Shakespear, incorporates a movie within a movie; and I play the producer of that movie - Richard's Gear - Warhol eat your heart out.

The film, which debuted at the Wexner Center Film Festival, is seventeen minutes long and takes only a few minutes to download (on broadband - a good bit longer on dial-up), but is worth the trouble (if you ask me).In any case, take a shot at it (no pun intended).

At the Dunes Bidding Farewell to Cape Cod

The Dunes & Tunes

Hey Folks -

My final report from Provincetown centers on my last bit of time there when I visited the famous dunes and then drove away back to the airport in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to fly home.

There were interesting geological facts to discover and beautiful sights to see (pictures are porovided) - the end of a most memorable adventure.

One last note: as I drove away on Highway 6, I listened to WOMR Radio, the local, Provincetown radio station (Mary Martin has a Uke Program every Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. - available on the net). Just before it faded out the DJ played two songs perfect for my return to Ohio.

The first involved a trucker who helped out the people of New Orleans by "stealing" the locked-up, unused FEMA trailers in Arkansas and hauling them to homeless folks in New Orleans. The Ohio connection was his truck; it was a Kenworth, which is made in a factory twenty minutes south of Circleville (South of Columbus, Ohio) where I live.

As if that weren't enough, the last song before the signal faded was a funny tune, "Now We Can Blame the Cows," by Victoria Parks, a long-time friend of mine from Columbus.

Nice.

Frank Schaefer - rest in peace

Folks,

I mentioned at the start of this Provincetown report that at the sound check we sadly missed our dear friend, Ukulele Diva, and organizer of the show, Mary J. Martin. She missed the sound check and the show.

We saw her later that night and tried to console her for the loss of her beloved husband, Frank Schaefer, who passed away earlier that very day.

Below is Frank's obituary. I'm truly sorry I never got to meet him.

- Uke Man

Frank Schaefer Longtime proprietor of the White Horse Inn

Frank Schaefer, a long-time resident of Provincetown, died on Sept. 14 in the company of friends and in the arms of his wife, Mary.

For years his White Horse Inn, on Commercial Street, has welcomed artists, wanderers, the famous and not so famous, many of whom have returned season after season.

Frank was born in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad-Oblast) in 1937, and thus he lived his early years under Stalin and Hitler. He first arrived in America on a Fulbright scholarship as a journalism student.

His interests and accomplishments were many. He started the Wellfleet Al-Anon meetings and took part in the creation of the Fine Arts Work Center.

“I was always surrounded by artists,” he would say. As a lifetime member of the Provincetown Art Association, he did everything there from laying floors to repairing roof leaks at the same time that he himself was a painter and serious photographer.

The White Horse Inn was named after the famous White Horse Tavern in New York City, where he drank with and got to know some of the great visual artists of the day. As he restored the inn and furnished it, it became filled with art and other objects of interest — it has been dubbed, lovingly, “the world’s largest Cornell Box.”

He was Buddhist by action; he worked for world peace and the rights of others. The White Horse Inn was the first in town to rent to persons of color. He was also a concerned and constant friend to animals, especially to Boston, Maggie, Blackjack and Ida Tiger Lily.

He is survived by his sister, Ulrike Schaefer Frank of Berlin; his brother, Knut of Munich; a sister by his father’s second wife, Heike; his wife, Mary J. Martin; and his golden cat, Buckaroo.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, his relatives ask that you do something remarkably kind in memory of dear, brave Frank.

All good things come to an end, and the New York crew who'd arrived on the ferryboat from Boston (I drove) left a day before I did. Here are some pictures from that day (see the video link on the first one).

Mary Martin Ave. & Cape Cod Bay

Hey Folks -

One of the highlights of the trip was directly across the street from the White Horse Inn: Mary Martin Ave., a cozy little super highway to the beach - where I was able to spend a few restful hours in the days following the shows, and where Mary taught me to see amazing colors on the magic waters of the bay.

I met "The Count" - Jerry Nelson

The Provincetown Theater Sound Check

Hey Folks -

The day I arrived in Provincetown was the day of the show, and I got there just in time for the sound check at 2:00.

Most of the players were there or soon to be there: my friends from New York -Sonic Uke (Jason Tagg & Ted Gottfried) and Dana Mc Coy; and local celebrities Jerry Nelson & Bill Evaul.

Sadly missing was our dear friend, Ukulele Diva, and organizer of the show, Mary J. Martin. More on that in a later posting.

It was great to see my friends and to meet Bill and Jerry. We were all excited upon learning that Jerry had been a major contributor to the Muppet Show and Sesame Street, serving as "The Count" and other major characters he created.

From the net ( http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Academy/3108/chjn.html ) :

Jerry Nelson

Jerry Nelson was born in Oklahoma but raised in Washington D.C. He was "performing on a local radio station when he was 9 years old, [where] he began to acquire his repertoire of voices...During one lean period he answered an advertisement placed by Bill and Cora Baird, who were looking for people to tour with their puppet theater. Lying about his experience (he had never worked with puppets before) Nelson was hired and learned quickly. He then auditioned for the Muppets (1963) and was hired as a temporary replacement for Frank Oz (who had been drafted into the service). When Oz returned [Nelson] worked for the Muppets from time to time until 1970...then he became a full-time member of the company." Nelson's tremendous vocal range allowed him to perform many different types of characters as well as the announcer for "Vetrinarian Hospital" and "Pigs in Space." Nelson has also worked on other projects besides "The Muppet Show" such as "Sesame Street", "Fraggle Rock", and other television specials, movies and videos.

For a more in-depth bio of Jerry, see: http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Jerry_Nelson

It was a great pleasure to meet Jerry and share the stage with someone who had provided me with so much enjoyment over the years.

Off to Provincetown

Hey Folks -

After a few wonderful New Hampshire days I was off to Provincetown, Mass.

I was a guest at the fantastic White Horse Inn, an old Captain's house from the late 1700's. Beautiful rooms and halls filled with extraordinary art collected over a lifetime - and a stone's throw from the bay, a deli, the theater, and a mailbox!!

And all this because of the kindness and inspiration of the White Horse propriator and Ukulele Diva, Mary J. Martin.

Concord, New Hampshire Open Stage at The Green Martini

Hey Folks -

While visiting my son Travis and his family, I had the opportunity to participate in an open stage evening put on by Travis's friend (and now my friend, too) Stephen Ullman at the Green Martini.

It was the highest level of performance at such a venue that I have ever experienced. Throughout the night top notch entertainers performed their specialties which covered everything from country, folk, swing, and rock, to pop - including many original tunes.

I did four songs and had a great time.

The famous Red Arrow Diner !!!

Posted by Picasa
Hey Folks -

The recent trip started with a visit to my son's family in New Hampshire. A great time; my two-year-old granddaughter Paloma is finally taking to the old bearded one. We had a lot of fun.

One day Paloma, her mother Trini, and her "Abui" (maternal Grandmother) Christina all went to the famous Red Arrow Diner ("since 1922" - since before and through the Great Depression) for breakfast. Everyone had pancakes but me. I HAD to try the Eggs Benedict that replaced the Canadian bacon with crab cakes. Wonderful!! Don't they look delectable.

It was a magical outing - AND I brought a mug home!!

Hot Times was cool - Now off to School !!!

Hey Folks -

The Hot Times show was a lot of fun!! I got to do my thing, was well-received, and got to hear some great acts perform as well. Check out Hot Times next year!!!

NOW - I'm back at it, visiting the young and trying to get them to trust themselves more than the "experts," urging them to be brave and make a better world.

Here's just a bit of what I'll be presenting:

October 17, 2004, New York Times Magazine - Ron Suskind, quoting an unnamed aide to
George W. Bush:
The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." ... "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

"Are you gonna believe me, or your lying eyes?" - Red Foxx

Can we KNOW anything? I think we can. Is it easy to know things? I don’t think so. Is it good to know things? I think so. Is it easier to accept things than it is to know them? Sure.

Do people want to know things, or would they rather accept things they are told and act as if they are known? Good question.

It seems that, at least in terms of how things have been run historically, folks prefer to have their “knowledge” placed in their heads by someone else. Every “civilization” that has ever existed has rested on a dream world - created out of whole cloth, but nevertheless accepted by its people as real. Successive “civilizations” laugh at the “silly” notions of defunct cultures, but go to vicious war to establish the “truth” of their own. There are a lot of possible explanations for why this has always been the case, but I’m not getting into that now.

Instead, let’s look at the possibilities of doing it differently. Perhaps if enough people could become aware of the simple truth above about the relativity of cultural “truth,” it could lead to a saner, better world. Here is a list of options. If forced to decide, which one of each pair would YOU choose?

Science or Faith / Learning or Accepting / Education or Indoctrination /Thought or Feeling / Knowing or Guessing / Self or Authority /Evidence or Dogma / Activity or Passivity / The Present or the Past /Sanity or Adjustment / Doubt or Certainty / Discovery or Testimonials /Reality or Virtual Reality / Objectivity or Spin / Truth or Fiction / Freedom or Security / Independence or Dependence / Intelligence or Emotion / Courage or Cowardice

Explanations for the dream-world nature of “civilizations” can be found in the second options. The inherent difficulty of the first options – along with the ease of the alternatives - explains the attractiveness of the second options.

In reading an article on the use of aroma in Las Vegas casinos, I came across this comment:"Our olfactory receptors are directly connected to the limbic system, the most ancient and primitive part of the brain, which is thought to be the seat of emotion."

Our ancient, primitive natures DO make it easy for us to FEEL rather than THINK. Isn’t it ironic that many of the folks who most strenuously object to the notion of evolution – the idea that we descended from animals - are the ones relying disproportionately on their ancient, primitive (animal?) brain centers?

Though they may feel a necessity to do so, they don’t really NEED to. Each of us is equipped to make either the difficult choice or the easy choice. It really IS up to us. It all depends on whether we are courageous enough to use our neo-cortex rather than our limbic system. -

What Goes Around, Comes Around

Hey Folks -

The police woman who publicly attacked others (see: http://www.ukuleleman.net/2007/08/this-psycho-is-columbus-ohio-police.html )

should have considered the advice: he who lives in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

It seems she has lived a low and questionable life, and now - thanks to her judgmental arrogance, everybody knows it. She probably thinks if she can keep people focused on hating Blacks, Jews, immigrants, and liberals; they won't notice how bad SHE is.

Woman was rejected by police review board
15 years after getting badge anyway, she made racist videos
Saturday, September 1, 2007
By Theodore Decker
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The evaluation board didn't hold back in 1991.

Susan L. Purtee, then a 44-year-old candidate to become a Columbus police officer, was before the division review board charged with evaluating her worthiness to wear a badge.

The board's recommendation would be passed on to Larry H. James, Columbus' public safety director at the time. James would have the final say on whether she would be hired.

Speaking for the three-member board, Lt. Rickert M. Shewring wrote of Purtee:

"Undependable, walks off the job (quits) when things don't go her way; job history is deplorable, has not had a steady job for any length of time; several references of insubordination. She claims that she has had so many jobs because she doesn't like direction…

"Has worked 20 years and has nothing to show for it (heavily in debt)," he continued. "Applicant is shallow and does not accept criticism well."

The board's opinion, dated July 31, 1991, was unanimous: Purtee was not acceptable.
On Nov. 10, records show, the city hired her anyway.

Purtee, now 60, is off the street and behind a desk at Police Division headquarters while internal affairs investigates her role in homemade videos she and her sister posted online. In the videos, they disparage Jews, blacks, Cubans and immigrants. Purtee is white.

Purtee could not be reached yesterday afternoon and has not commented on the investigation. Her sister has said that the videos were harmless exercises in free speech, even as city and civic leaders have banded together to denounce Purtee and her views.

Before hiring a new officer, the city conducts extensive background checks that delve into the applicant's personal and professional history.

Those checks revealed that Purtee always had been interested in service careers but decided to pursue police work only after meeting her boyfriend at the time, Richard Lawwell, then a Columbus police lieutenant who highly recommended her. Lawwell could not be reached yesterday.

Review-board members also could not be reached for comment, but their written remarks reflected their shared concern about Purtee's financial history, personal life and lack of professional direction. She was 100th in her class of 116 at St. Francis DeSales High School, and at the time of her interview was driving an uninsured car.

"Seems to use poor judgment on big decisions," wrote Kim Jacobs, now a division commander.
"Does not like people telling her what to do," wrote Shewring. "Very opinionated. Is judgmental about people."

Board members noted that she had married and divorced twice, once to a man 32 years her senior and then to a man she met at her first husband's funeral who "left country due to immigration problems," in the words of one reviewer.

After a year of marriage, that husband borrowed all of Purtee's money, $1,500, and left the country because he didn't have his green card, the background report said. They divorced in 1986.

James said yesterday that he didn't recall Purtee among the many hires he approved but agreed that the decision to hire her must have been his.

He said filling police academy classes hinged on an ever-changing list of prospective candidates of varying quality.

"I'd have to look at what I was selecting from," he said. "Everything's relative on a scale of what I'm looking at. You may not get all your A model candidates."

After hearing excerpts of the reviews, James said he must have given Purtee's review some consideration.

"It would definitely cause you to pause and do that analysis," he said.

"She would not have been the perfect candidate," he said. "The question is, how many perfect candidates do you have to select from at the time? How many people did I in fact pass over?

That becomes the ultimate question.

"I understand the emotionalism of it," he said of the public outcry. The process "really was a relative review of where I thought the officer stood in the pool of applicants I had to choose from. You hope you got it right most of the time."

The Great Communicator

Hey Folks -

Can you immagine!! Duhbya can't make something "any more clear"??? Hmmmm . . . those crafty Asians; maybe they've heard about signing statements or about the Monkey-boy's penchant for lying (to his own people, much less fuhr'ners).

Most likely, what peeved Bush was the South Korean President's insistence that the Decider pronounce "nookyoular" correctly.

Bush, Roh have testy exchange at summit
By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press

SYDNEY, Australia - President Bush's talks with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun ended on a sour note Friday not over the war in Iraq, but rather the Korean conflict that ended with a truce more than five decades ago.

As Bush began to wind down his stay at the Asia-Pacific summit, Roh challenged him to make a declaration to end the Korean War. That conflict ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, so the two sides technically remain at war.

The awkward exchange occurred during the first in a series of sit-downs that Bush had here with leaders from Pacific Rim nations. He also spoke Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and will meet on Saturday with the leaders of Japan, Indonesia and Australia. Protesters plan a march through the city on Saturday, a day after scuffles broke out between riot police and some demonstrators.

. . .

Bush said that during his talks with Roh, he reaffirmed the U.S. position that Washington will consider the war formally over only when North Korean leader Kim Jong Il actually dismantles his nuclear program.

Whatever Roh heard Bush say through his translator, it wasn't good enough.

"I think I did not hear President Bush mention the — a declaration to end the Korean War just now," Roh said as cameras clicked and television cameras rolled.

Bush said he thought he was being clear, but obliged Roh and restated the U.S. position.
That wasn't good enough either. "If you could be a little bit clearer in your message," Roh said.
Bush, now looking irritated, replied: "I can't make it any more clear, Mr. President. We look forward to the day when we can end the Korean War. That will end — will happen when Kim verifiably gets rid of his weapons programs and his weapons."

The White House immediately downplayed the testy exchange and said the meeting went smoothly.

William Howard Taft, "Mr. Republican" says:

"Show a little personal responsibility! Eat less and save a Republican some money!!"

People are sick of being scapegoated by rich fucks

Hey Folks –

They’re at it again. The patrician editorial ginks at the Columbus Dispatch have discovered the problem with America: fat (“obese”) people.

It seems that even though the Dispatch and other rags have whined about fatties, people “don't seem to be getting the message.” They know “overeating” can cause problems “But they overeat anyhow.” Then “they complain about their health-care costs. They complain about the sagging economy. They complain about their eroding standard of living.”

The editorial claims they’re “not connecting the dots.” They just don’t get it that high medical costs, a declining American standard of living, and a poor economy are their fault. If fatties just starved themselves, “employers would be able to spend less on health insurance and more on other things, including [ insane laughter ] wages.

Right!!!

This whole thing is about "employers" making more money for themselves. Neither they nor the Dispatch give a damn about the health of the rest of us. Talk about complaining!! These greedy fatheads are just whining that they could make more for themselves if their employees showed more "personal responsibility."

Their own personal responsibility is never brought up because it would quickly be revealed that it is directed only toward themselves.

Connect the dots
Health-care costs are high because Americans make themselves sick

Saturday, September 1, 2007

Despite a drumbeat in the news media for many years, including on this page, about the hazards of obesity, people don't seem to be getting the message. A study by the Trust for America's Health says not a single state registered a decline in obesity rates last year.

Rates have gone up in 31 states, including Ohio. More than 25 percent of adult Ohioans are obese. More than 14 percent of Ohio's children are overweight.

People know that if they eat more calories than they burn, they're going to gain weight. They know that being overweight will cause all kinds of health problems. They know that those health problems are expensive to treat and can kill them.

But they overeat anyhow.

And then they complain about their health-care costs. They complain about the sagging economy. They complain about their eroding standard of living.

But they don't connect the dots.

They don't realize that health-care costs are rising, in part, because people are eating themselves sick.

If they kept themselves healthier, their doctor bills and insurance premiums would be lower. Their employers would be able to spend less on health insurance and more on other things, including wages.

Yes, plenty of forces work against people who want to be fit. Some neighborhoods don't have sidewalks and parks. School lunches sometimes are not as nutritious as they could be. Today's busy families eat out more often and might not be able to find accurate nutrition information on restaurant food.

But even if all those problems were solved, people still would have to make good choices. The obesity rate isn't going to improve until personal responsibility improves.
