Do Bears Menstruate/Ejaculate in the Woods?
“In vitro embryos have right to life, pope says
By Nicole Winfield, Associated Press February 28, 2006
VATICAN CITY -- Pope Benedict XVI said yesterday that embryos developed for in vitro fertilization deserve the same right to life as fetuses, children, and adults -- and that that right extends to embryos even before they are transferred into a woman's womb.
The Vatican has long held that human life begins at conception, but Benedict's comments were significant because he specified that an embryo in its earliest stages, when it is just a few cells, is as much a human life as an older being. . .
The Vatican opposes in vitro procedures because some embryos created in a laboratory are often discarded, whereas others are frozen, and still others are created solely for experimentation or to create stem cells.”
Yeah, you tell ‘em Papa ! Those frozen cells deserve the right to life ! They CAN be re-animated!! (it’s been proven in practice). But what about the bodies moldering in the ground? Or the fresh bodies in the morgue? Or the frozen bodies of a few wealthy narcissists (Walt Disney?) lounging in liquid nitrogen?
Do THEY have a right to life too? Or is it OVER for THEM? And shouldn’t we freeze EVERYBODY who dies and keep them cold and safe until the re-animation trick is a done deal? Aren’t THESE accumulations of millions (maybe billions) of sacred cells just as worthy as the frozen embryonic few????
And, if we are going to deal with the POTENTIAL re-animation of frozen embryos and dead bodies, what about all the unfertilized eggs women expel every month and all the sperm men discard in various ways (most of which the Church considers to be “sinful” – talk about guilt and neurosis!)?
Shouldn’t all these potential children be respected? Strain out the eggs! Freeze that sperm!! Get ‘em together later. And if that is too much to expect for the present, at least require a decent burial for these cellular victims of neglect and abuse!
The Pope has spoken; it MUST be true !!
But then, when I was a kid, I could end up in hell for eating meat on Friday – the Pope said so. Galileo was a heretic when I was a kid; the Pope said so. Millions – maybe billions – suffered the torments of hell in “Purgatory” when I was a kid; the Pope said so.
Now, about all of that (except maybe Purgatory, but even THAT is up in the air), the Pope says “Oops! Never mind !”
Hmmmmm . . .
Well, are you gonna believe the Pope or your lying neo-cortex?
